What Is WPM and How Is It Measured?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute — the standard unit for measuring typing speed. In the typing world, one "word" is defined as five characters, including spaces. This standardization exists so that typing a long word like "communication" and five short characters like "a b c d" count equally, making comparisons fair regardless of the text used in the test.
Your gross WPM is the raw speed — total characters typed divided by five, divided by the time in minutes. Your net WPM accounts for errors: each mistake subtracts from your score. Most professional typing tests report net WPM, which is why accuracy matters as much as speed. A typist doing 80 WPM with 95% accuracy scores higher than one doing 90 WPM with 80% accuracy.
Average Typing Speeds by Skill Level
- Beginner (under 30 WPM) — hunt-and-peck typing, looking at the keyboard. Two-finger typists typically fall here.
- Average (40–60 WPM) — the typical office worker or casual computer user. Comfortable but not optimized.
- Above average (60–80 WPM) — touch typist with good muscle memory. Most people who type regularly land here.
- Fast (80–100 WPM) — professional typists, writers, and developers who type extensively every day.
- Very fast (100+ WPM) — competitive typists, stenographers, and people who have deliberately practiced speed typing.
- Elite (120–160+ WPM) — top competitive typists. World records exceed 200 WPM for short bursts.
How to Improve Your Typing Speed
- Learn touch typing — using all ten fingers with correct home row position is the single biggest speed improvement available to hunt-and-peck typists.
- Prioritize accuracy over speed — slow down until you make fewer errors. Speed builds naturally; bad habits are hard to unlearn.
- Practice consistently — 15 to 20 minutes daily beats occasional long sessions. Muscle memory builds through repetition over time.
- Use proper posture — wrists slightly elevated, fingers curved, screen at eye level. Strain slows you down and causes injury over time.
- Learn keyboard shortcuts — much of a professional's time at a keyboard is not pure typing. Shortcuts reduce mouse time significantly.
Most people plateau at their current speed because they never deliberately push past their comfort zone. To break a plateau, type slightly faster than feels comfortable, accept more errors temporarily, and let accuracy catch up as the new speed becomes natural.
